One of the usual pets in every home is the cat, this is because many people find it easy to take care of. Likewise, it is considered as a very sweet animal. However, all cat lovers must be cautious because cats may cause allergies to us humans especially to a number of allergic individuals.

Cats contain a substance called glycoprotein, secreted by their sebaceous glands, which is the main cause of allergen of cats. This can be found in the fur of the cat, in its urine, saliva, hair roots, and pelt. The worst is that cat allergens are very tiny, about ten times smaller than dust particles, are airborne for almost a few months and can be carried on clothing, and different stuff exposed to cats.

An allergic individual exposed to cats and their allergens may suffer some symptoms such as reddening, swelling and watering of eyes, sneezing, itchiness of the nose, skin, ears, and some other parts of the body, may increase skin rashes, conciseness of breathing and some endure asthma.

One perfect preventive measure to avoid cat allergy is to remove cats in your home. If you cannot get rid of cats, you can reduce the allergen in your homes by avoiding the use of soft upholstered furniture. You should also off limit your cats especially on your living rooms and bedrooms. There is also a study, which shows that washing cats in a regular basis reduces its allergen.

An individual who suffers from cat allergy should always keep away from cats, and should frequently follow what is being advised by physicians, because some people who tend to disregard physician’s advises may cause more bad effects on them.

Itchy, watery eyes, runny nose and sneezing are all common symptoms which a vast majority of us experience as allergy symptoms at specific times throughout the year. Many individuals do everything in their power to avoid allergies including changing their diets, staying indoors or taking vitamin supplements. These may contribute to fighting allergies, but there is another effective way to do so. Immunotherapy or allergy shots are gaining popularity. Getting an allergy shot can be scary for some people, so we thought it would be best to fully explain allergy shots and address some common concerns.

How Do They Work?

Allergy shots contain a small amount of the substance which you are allergic to. If you are allergic to pollen, a small amount of pollen would be added to the shot. The amount is small enough so that it does not cause you to suffering from allergy symptoms, but enough so that you body gets used to fighting the allergen. Therefore, the next time your body comes in contact with that substance, it will be familiar with fighting it off and you will most likely not suffer from allergies.

Are Allergy Shots Safe For Everyone?

Although most people will have positive results from allergy shots, they are not right for everyone. Allergy shots are not recommended for individuals suffering from severe heart problems, asthma or other respiratory problems. Also, children under the age of 5 should not be exposed to allergy shots for safety reasons.

What Is The Procedure?

Once you have decided that you would like to get allergy shots, you will receive a shot 1 or 2 times a week for about 6 months. Afterwards, your maintenance shots will require you to get one shot a month, year round for about 3-5 years. Once you have received allergy shots on a regular basis for a couple years, you can discuss it with your doctor and they may tell you its okay to stop getting them at that point.

What Are The Side Effects?

Although allergy shots are effective for many individuals in eliminating allergy symptoms, certain individuals may experience some harmful side effects. Some people may experience feelings of shock when the shot is initially injected, others may feel light-headed or nauseated. For this reason, doctors are required to keep patients in their office for at least 20 minutes after receiving each shot in order to ensure the patient’s safety.

Some people swear by allergy shots while others criticize the effects or claim they don’t work effectively. If you are considering receiving immunotherapy, contact your doctor to discuss. Your doctor will give you more insight in order for you to determine if this is something you really want to do.

Cow’s Milk Allergy is considered as one of the most common food allergies experienced by young children. Luckily, most babies overcome milk allergies when they reach the age of two or three years. Meanwhile, parents who have babies with cow’s milk allergy can be comforted that though there is no exact cure for this allergy, it can be managed by means of keeping their babies dairy-free.

How will you know if you baby has a cow’s milk allergy?

Babies who have this type of allergy may develop one or more of the below symptoms:

• Skin rash or eczema
• Vomiting
• Cramps or abdominal pain
• Diarrhea or constipation

However, there are some who can develop more serious symptoms such as anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis normally occurs after a minute or two of eating or consuming food which they can be allergic to. Other symptoms can be swelling of mouth, tongue and face.

Now, what will you do if your baby is confirmed to have this allergy?

• Breast feed the baby

Instead of bottle feeding, breast feed you baby. If your child already has a cow’s milk allergy, do not stop breastfeeding. As a matter of fact, the symptoms can alleviate as you remove dairy products from his or her diet.

• Formula feed the baby

Your doctor would recommend you to change the milk-based formula diet for your child to hydrolysate formulas or soy-based diet.

On the one hand, if your child was diagnosed with a severe cow’s milk allergy, your doctor may prescribe you with a special medication. Medications like epinephrine or antihistamine are the usual prescriptions given to child with severe allergic reactions.

What are the preventions of cow’s milk allergy?

As your baby starts to eat solid foods, be careful not to give him foods which contain milk.

Follow what you have read in this article and surely you can keep your baby from having cow’s milk allergy. Believe in the saying, “an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure”. Therefore, prevent it while you are given the chance to do so.

Does it ever seem to you like your nose is constantly congested? Perhaps you have a know it runs like the Mississippi River. How about itchy sinuses? Sometimes when these things come upon us we wonder if it’s a cold that just won’t go away. Well I sincerely doubt that that is the case. I believe those are the symptoms of an allergy.

What you have to figure out is exactly what you are allergic to before you can effectively treat the symptoms. I recall suffering from allergies as a kid and having to go to the doctor and do a series of skin tests to determine exactly which allergies affected me. This will probably involve a number of oils and needles. You know, they scrape your skin and then dab some substance like pollen or grass on it to see if it reacts. But in order to effectively create an allergy treatment you must first know what allergy it is that you are dealing with.

Are you an allergy sufferer? I hadn’t really bad when I was a kid. I think he can outgrow these things to appoint as you immune system becomes stronger. But for myself it was so bad that I actually had to get three injections a week for years for my allergy treatment and for my immune system finally took over and did the job.

As far as allergy treatments go this was a lot of fun, but it actually became a teen and didn’t bother me after a while. The shots themselves didn’t hurt because the needle is the doctor used was really small. Well, I guess actually sometimes it did hurt when he hit a muscle, but that was no big deal.

I’m happy to report now that the allergy treatment that I recently was indeed very effective. I do get the occasional congested nose in fits of sneezing, but that usually only occurs when I’m cutting the lawn or some other such activity where the contact with the allergen is at its highest.

Surfing the World Wide Web is an excellent way to collect information that be of value to you. There are quite a few over-the-counter remedies that can be effective as allergy treatments. But I must caution you that if you’re allergies are really starting to get the better if you, common sense dictates that you see a doctor.

If you do go the over-the-counter route you must always be sure to read and comprehend the ingredients before using. I understand you want to curb those annoying allergies, but you don’t want more serious problems to grapple with. You can also consult your local pharmacist for some general info on the best allergy treatment for you or your child. There’s no need to suffer needlessly if you can benefit from an effective allergy treatment.

Allergy, Allergens and Allergic Disorders – Symptoms, Treatment and Diagnosis Testing for allergies can be very difficult as it is not easy to pinpoint exactly what is causing the allergy symptoms. However, it is possible to decide what allergies and irritants someone is exposed to, how they may be caused and what can be done to prevent or treat the symptoms.

Different allergies may also respond to different tests, with skin allergies being caused by differing factors such as food intake or environmental allergies.

Allergy tests should always be interpreted by a trained professional who will discuss a patients history as well as their current symptoms.

Allergy Skin Tests

Skin tests are commonly used as they are easy, safe, fast and painless – typically in the form of a skin prick test.

The skin prick test consists of placing drops of a possible allergen, for example food, mould, dust etc. on the back or forearm. The skin is then lightly pricked with a special needle to absorb the substance. After a short period of time, 10 to 20 minutes, the area is examined to see if there is any redness or swelling. An examination will normally measure the affected area and if their is a swelling larger than 3mm the test is typically considered positive.

An intradermal allergy test may be used when the skin prick test has not worked or provided a conclusive result. An allergen is injected into the outer layer of skin with a fine needle and any swelling that forms is once again measured.

Skin tests are normally very over-sensitive and can identify allergens that are not causing a problem at all, so their reliability has been questioned. Skin allergy tests are usually used for drug and insect allergies and in some cases for food allergies.

Allergy Blood Test

A blood test for allergies is called a Radioallergosorbent test (RAST), where a blood sample is taken from the patient and mixed with the suspected allergen in a laboratory to see if there is any reaction. Blood tests can provide an insight into an allergy but they are typically not as accurate as a skin test.

A newer version of the RAST test is available called the ImmunoCap which is used together with a skin test to help determine whether a patient has lost any sensitivity to a food or substance before taking a food challenge test. It is still not as effective as a skin test and further research is being carried out as to its effectiveness in evaluating an allergic persons symptoms and causes.

Allergy Food Challenge Test

A food challenge test is where increasing amounts of a suspect food is fed to the patient and any reaction is noted or observed. If the patient can tolerate the food up to an amount which equals a typical intake, then the food is usually deemed safe enough to re-introduce into their diet.

Other Allergy Tests

There are many other allergy tests available, however it is always wise to proceed with caution when choosing a test to take and reviewing the results from an allergy test.

If a test gives a long list of foods that might be causing an allergy, or the patient is asked to score their reaction to many foods, then the test is probably not accurate. True food allergies are usually limited to a few foods, with the true number for any person being less than five.

Food allergy reactions can also depend on many different factors, such as the state of the food (cooked or raw), the amount eaten, the patients health and so on. A test may indicate a mild reaction but this is no confirmation that the patient will suffer no reaction or a severe reaction in the future.

If you suffer from allergies, then you know that allergy medicine can often seem like a gift from God. Allergy medicine often only needs to be taken once a day in order to assure that you stay itchy-eye free and are able to enjoy your time outside or in your home. Depending on the type of allergy that you have, there are different types of allergy medicine that you may want to take. Here is a brief overview of the two most popular types of allergy medicine:

Shot:

The allergy shot is a type of allergy medicine that is administered on a monthly or weekly basis. The shot has medicines that will counteract the allergies that you have so that if you come into contact with any of those allergens, you will not have an allergic reaction (or the reaction will not be as strong as it would be if you did not have the shot.)

The shot can also be administered after you come into contact with an allergen if you suffer an attack. The shot, when administered afterwards, will be full of steroids that will almost immediately take affect in trying to get you allergen free and healthy. The steroids will boost your system and help to fight off any allergens that your body is reacting negatively to. However, most people opt not to take the retroactive shot as part of their allergy medicine routine as this type of treatment must be administered immediately in severe cases so as to avoid death.

Pill:

There are several types of pills that you can take in order to overcome allergies. These types of pills vary base don the severity of your allergy. For example, if you are allergic to a common airborne stimulant, such as dust or pollen, then you may want to take a strong, once a day pill, such as Claritin, however, if you have a poison ivy rash, then you may need a lighter dose of allergy medicine that you take once or several times a day to get rid of the rash. Benadryl is a good example of an allergy medicine that is only taken in spurts.

Allergy medicine is easy to find but is often expensive and can be a hassle if you are not accustomed to taking daily doses of allergy medicines. If you are interested in taking allergy medicine, then experiment with several types first. You will find that your body reacts differently to these different medicines, so it is true that one really might be better for you than another.

Dog Allergy

The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology or AAAAI estimates that about 10 million pet lovers or pet owners in the United States are allergic to animals’ fur.

More and more households in the country are adopting or sheltering a pet dog, which is considered man’s best friend even from the time of the ancient civilization.

Dogs are canines that are perceived as intelligent and trainable among all other animals. We see dogs everywhere, in the movies, in cartoons, in the television (remember Lassie?), and even in high-security areas like malls. In the latter case, dogs are trained to sniff bombs, drugs and other illegal substances in the surroundings.

The world is a ‘dog eat dog world’ and it can be even found truthful if you are allergic to dogs.

Dog allergies and cat allergies in similarities and contrast

However, there are more reported or diagnosed cases of cat allergies than dog allergies all throughout the world because cats are more inclined to spread their danders through their habitual and constant grooming or bathing session by rubbing saliva all throughout their body.

Dog allergy can be found in people with specific allergies to dog furs and those who have history of asthma. Asthma is another reaction triggered by exposure to allergens or allergy-causing substances.

Modern science and recent findings indicate that people who were exposed to either cats and dogs while they were infants will unlikely develop cat or dog allergy. It is because their immune system will get accustomed to the two animals’ danders at an early stage.

Also take notice that people who have developed cat or dog allergy grew up in households where there were no cats or dogs around. Start asking now, or likely, begin by looking at yourself or somebody you know. The assumption is accurate, right?

Symptoms of dog allergy

Just like in any other form of allergy, symptoms or manifestation of dog allergy include wheezing, coughing, itchy and/ or teary or watery eyes and constant sneezing.

Severe dog allergy attacks can be indicated by difficulty in breathing, which is similar to a severe asthma attack. If left untreated, the person’s life could be in danger.

But remember, treatments for asthma and other allergies, including dog allergy are only treatments or relievers. They are not meant and they can not ensure long term cures.

Allergies are not curable, they are only treatable. Hence, dog allergy if successfully treated will reoccur if the person or the patient exposes himself again to dog fur or danders.

Treatment and avoidance

The best treatment is always prevention. As they say, an ounce of prevention is far better than pounds of cure. So it is in the case of dog allergies.

To treat dog allergies, the patient will have to be advised that he should avoid getting near or cuddling dogs. Through that, dog allergy can be successfully controlled or curtailed.

But if that basic prevention measure is ineffective, the patient will have to take either antihistamines, decongestants or corticosteroids. Antihistamines are the common drugs taken during asthma or other allergy attacks.

Decongestants decongest breathing areas or tubes in the body by reducing swellness of nasal tissues thus relieving breathing.

Corticosteroids on the other hand, are drugs that reduce or eliminate inflammation of organs or tissues in the body that may have resulted from the onset of the dog allergy.

Are you one of the millions that suffer from allergies? Are you looking for information on allergy remedies? If you are a chronic victim of the distressing effects of allergies then it’s high time you found an effective allergy remedy. There are several allergy remedy medications available on the market.

In order to effectively treat your allergies, you need to find the allergy remedy most aligned with your symptoms and needs. You have several avenues to choose from when searching for an allergy remedy. These avenues include: home remedies, allergy medication, environmental modifications, and a consultation with an Allergist.

Let’s start with home remedies. Home allergy remedies were used before allergy medications surfaced on the medical scene. Be wary of many home remedies. Many of these remedies are based on “old wives tales”.

However, there are some steps you can take at home that do work. For example, if you have an allergy to pollen you can minimize its effects by washing your clothing and hair when come home. Make sure to do this before you go to bed, so that you won’t spread any of the pollen onto your bedding.

Allergy medications are a wonderful allergy remedy. You can use over the counter antihistamine pills, lotions, and ointments. If you have a chronic allergy you can consult your physician for a stronger prescription allergy remedy. Nasal sprays are also a great tool against allergies. They act as a direct allergy remedy to your nasal passageways.

There are a few environmental modifications you can make as an allergy remedy. Wash bedding in hot water to remove dust mites. Use mattress and pillow covers to fight against dust mites. Keep your home clean and carpets vacuumed.

If you have severe allergies that can’t be managed with basic allergy remedies then head to your physician or allergist. They can take you through a series of allergy testing and provide the best treatment options for your situation. This may involve removing the allergy culprit from your environment, food plate, or clothing drawer. They can provide prescription allergy medication to knock your allergy out cold.

Skin Allergy

An effective approach to managing skin allergies has three components.

Firstly you must understand the condition, then you must discover if anything is triggering your skin reaction, and thirdly you must look after your skin.
Many people think that allergies only affect the respiratory or digestive systems, but they can also affect your largest organ- your skin. As with other allergies the immune system overreacts to the presence of certain substances and releases inflammation-producing chemicals. Do some research and talk to your doctor. You can be confident of controlling your skin condition better if you are sure you understand what causes it.

The second component in managing a skin allergy is identifying then eliminating the allergens and irritants that start the itching/scratching cycle. There are over three thousand known triggers for skin allergies. Many are natural, but there are plenty of man-made ones too.

A common man-made trigger is latex, which comes from the sap of the Brazilian rubber tree. The natural proteins and those added in the manufacturing process can trigger an allergic reaction. Most people are aware that this can lead to reactions if you wear latex gloves. However latex is also present in baby pacifiers, balloons, pencil erasers and elastic bands in undergarments. There can also be problems when latex particles become airborne and are inhaled. If you have a latex allergy try to avoid the material and use vinyl or plastic where possible.

Nickel is another trigger. In addition to the obvious nickel-containing metallic objects like coins and jewelry, nickel is also present in everyday objects like scissors, bathroom and kitchen cabinet handles, and zippers. Mascara, eye shadow and eye pencils also contain nickel. Experts estimate that the number of people suffering from a nickel allergy has risen about 40% in the last decade. Much of this is believed to be due to the popularity of body piercing. Some foods also have natural nickel content and people who suffer severe symptoms may need to restrict their diet under medical supervision. At present there is no way to desensitize a person with a nickel allergy. Avoidance is the best strategy.

The third component of effective management is looking after your skin. The easiest thing to do is to keep your fingernails short to reduce the damage caused by scratching.

Managing your skin’s condition means firstly moisturizing and softening the skin to ensure it does not dry out. Your doctor may recommend you use topical corticosteroid preparations to control the inflammation.

When you take a bath soak in lukewarm water for 20 to 30 minutes. Do not have hot baths or showers, as the heat will increase skin dryness and itching. You can add oatmeal or baking soda to the bath for a soothing effect, though it does not help moisturize the skin.

Use a mild soap or a non-soap cleanser with neutral pH (pH7). If you wish to add bath oils do so after you have been in the water so that it can seal in the moisture. Do not use bubble baths as they can form a barrier that stops the bathwater moisturizing your skin.

After the bath dry yourself by patting your skin with a soft towel. This helps retain moisture. Immediately after drying your skin apply a lotion or emollient cream to help your skin retain the moisture.

To look after your skin you will also need to avoid situations where you will experience extreme physical contact, heavy perspiration, or heavy clothing. This may mean avoiding some sports. Swimming is permissible if you rinse the chlorine from your skin as soon as you leave the pool, and use a moisturizer after drying yourself.

Follow these three steps and you will be able to control your skin allergy and minimize its impact on your everyday life.
